Fast approaching: The 119th Meeting of the Skeptics’ Circle

Here in the U.S., it’s smack dab in the middle of a three day holiday weekend. Given that, I’m chilling for a while. There’s some new material tomorrow, but today I have to head out for a celebration of my father-in-law’s 70th birthday and, between that , to work on a talk I have to give on Friday. That makes today the perfect time to post a reminder that the 119th Meeting of the Skeptics’ Circle is fast approaching and will arrive on Thursday, September 10 at Cubik’s Rube.

Instructions for submitting your skeptical blog posts are here. General guidelines for submission can be found here.

By Orac

Orac is the nom de blog of a humble surgeon/scientist who has an ego just big enough to delude himself that someone, somewhere might actually give a rodent's posterior about his copious verbal meanderings, but just barely small enough to admit to himself that few probably will. That surgeon is otherwise known as David Gorski.

That this particular surgeon has chosen his nom de blog based on a rather cranky and arrogant computer shaped like a clear box of blinking lights that he originally encountered when he became a fan of a 35 year old British SF television show whose special effects were renowned for their BBC/Doctor Who-style low budget look, but whose stories nonetheless resulted in some of the best, most innovative science fiction ever televised, should tell you nearly all that you need to know about Orac. (That, and the length of the preceding sentence.)

DISCLAIMER:: The various written meanderings here are the opinions of Orac and Orac alone, written on his own time. They should never be construed as representing the opinions of any other person or entity, especially Orac's cancer center, department of surgery, medical school, or university. Also note that Orac is nonpartisan; he is more than willing to criticize the statements of anyone, regardless of of political leanings, if that anyone advocates pseudoscience or quackery. Finally, medical commentary is not to be construed in any way as medical advice.

Hey, thanks for the plug (though it’s actually the 119th Meeting that’s coming up). Enjoy chilling, birthdays, and talking to people. I suppose I’d better get writing.

This is also known as :” The annual gathering of reductionist little brains that are in love with themselves”. Have fun.

I’m just going to assume “Wilbur Dillman” is the blog’s latest troll.
I do have to say that this is the first time in ages I’ve seen anyone use “Reductionist” as an insult.
No brighter than anything else any other troll has posted, anywhere.

Reductionist?

As in reducing things to provable/disprovable/uncertain, rather than believing in whatever you want to believe in?

Little brains?

I guess that is consistent with believing in whatever you want to believe in. The size of the brain doesn’t really have much to do with the capacity. The surface area is more important. 😉

Believing I could fly would be great, as long as I don’t do anything reductionist, as in test the idea. OTOH, that might be great for Wilbur Dillman. One less little brain to do whatever it is that skeptics do that annoys him.
